Hello, I’m Dr. Margaret Gavian. I hold a doctorate in Psychology, am a certified Reiki Master, and have spent over 25 years dedicated to resilience, self-care, and mental well-being. My mission is simple: to support those who serve—firefighters, public safety professionals, healthcare workers, and anyone facing extreme stress.

Fire Service, Mental Health & Holistic Healing

My career has been shaped by a deep commitment to first responders. As the founder of Blue Peak Consulting, I’ve designed and led resilience programs for fire departments across Minnesota, helping firefighters, EMS, law enforcement, and dispatchers develop the skills needed to navigate stress and trauma. My hands-on experience as a firefighter and EMT gives me a unique perspective on the challenges of public safety.

Beyond traditional psychology, I’ve embraced holistic health, integrating mind-body medicine and energy work into my practice. True resilience comes from addressing both the mind and body, and I’ve seen firsthand how complementary healing approaches help prevent burnout and promote long-term well-being. My approach is practical, science-backed, and focused on real-world solutions.

Experience That Spans the Globe

Over the past two decades, I’ve worked with a diverse range of people—from first responders and military personnel to refugees, gang members, and survivors of mass trauma. My work has taken me to conflict zones in Israel, Gaza, and Kosovo, to the FDNY after 9/11, and to the Capitol Police following the events of January 6, 2021. These experiences reinforce my belief that self-care isn’t optional—it’s essential.

In addition to my consulting work, I serve as faculty for The Center for Mind-Body Medicine, helping communities worldwide develop resilience strategies. I’m also a member of the Psychedelic Medicine Task Force for the Minnesota Secretary of State, exploring new frontiers in mental health treatment.

Beyond the Work

When I’m not working, you’ll find me exploring the world with my two boys, dancing, spending time in nature, or soaking in the arts and culture of Minneapolis. My own journey has taught me the power of balance, self-care, and human connection—values I bring into every aspect of my work.

I’m here to help those who dedicate their lives to others—ensuring they have the resilience and well-being to keep showing up strong.

Whether you are experiencing symptoms that make life feel difficult or if you are facing decisions that are causing you stress, you don’t have to feel trapped. You CAN feel better!

I have expertise in working with people experiencing transitions and/or mental health symptoms that are getting in the way of living life. Whether a relationship struggle, difficulty managing substance use/abuse/addiction, depression, grief and loss, a chronic illness, or needing trauma recovery and management, psychotherapy can build upon your skills and find old patterns that are no longer working for you to have an improved sense of well-being. It also allows for opportunity to explore and grow in new ways.

I provide short and long term psychotherapy and supportive counseling to individuals, couples, and families. I also offer opportunities for participating in a restorative or healing circle. There are many choices when it comes to finding a mental health therapist. It can be difficult to make a decision about which provider is best for you. Exploring this website may let you know a little more about me and my practice to see if it fits your needs.

I've been a therapist for over a decade. In that time I have had the privilege of supporting adults, children, and teens as they navigate their own unique paths forward. As a senior community faculty member at Metropolitan State University, I am passionate about sharing my expertise and shaping the next generation of mental health professionals.

My focuses include helping clients overcome the impacts of all kinds of trauma and cultivate resilience. A particular emphasis of mine is working with first responders because I believe it is imperative that we show up for the people who always show up. Beyond my professional life, I love hiking, gardening, attending concerts, and going on adventures with my husband and our kids.

I strive to create a safe, nonjudgmental atmosphere for clients to explore their relationships, values, strengths, and changes they want to make. I strongly believe that everyone is capable of persevering through life's challenges and making positive change, if given the proper tools, skills, resources and support. I tailor my approach to match the unique needs of each individual.

I am a strong advocate of empowering clients through education about the brain and mental health, to help them take control of their own lives. I focus on tapping into and building upon underlying resilience I believe all clients have. I am a direct communicator but have a casual approach and appreciate (dark) humor in sessions.

I am experienced in treating adults (18+) experiencing: Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Personality Changes, Psychosis, PTSD, Relationship Difficulties, Self-Harming Behavior, Suicidal Ideation, Trauma, and Violent Behavior. I am licensed in Minnesota and Wisconsin and practice from DBT, CBT, ACT, person-centered, and trauma-informed approaches. I am trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) to treat traumatic experiences through bilateral eye movements.

I am competent with the culture of public safety work and have a passion for working with those that help their community including physicians, nurses, law enforcement, firefighters, dispatchers, correctional officers and EMTs. I contract with first responder specific EAPs as well as with individual first responder departments to provide mental health focused training and support. When I am not working, you can find me baking, working out, spending time with my partner and daughter, reading psychological thrillers (surprise!), and binge-watching the latest Netflix show.

I truly believe that authenticity and the therapeutic relationship are invaluable. I believe that therapy will not work if there is not a strong therapeutic alliance. I am often described as being a laid-back, compassionate clinician who values humor in session. However, I am not afraid to challenge you and be direct. I view each individual uniquely and therefore I do not believe in one set way of therapy. I mainly practice from trauma-informed, person-centered, relational and CBT approaches. I value meeting people where they are at and learning about your strengths to help them in session. I tend to be more relational in nature and I truly enjoy getting to know about all aspects of her clients’ lives.

I enjoy working with adults (18+) who may be struggling with concerns related to: Anxiety, Depression, Disordered Eating, Life Stressors, Parenting Concerns, Self-Esteem, Self-Harm, Substance Use, Suicidal Ideation, and Trauma. I am competent in working with individuals who have experienced addiction, as well as their families who have been impacted by this. I am familiar and comfortable working with client’s who are prescribed medication-assisted treatments (e.g., Suboxone, Sublocade, Ketamine, etc.). I have attended specialized training on working with first responders, am committed to learning more on how best to serve this population and enjoy working with first responders as clients. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat trauma, however I only utilize this for in-person sessions. I try to view my clients’ presenting issues from a trauma-informed lens.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my partner, three sons, and three dogs (you read that right…we have a full house)! Additionally, I like spending time with my friends and being outdoors. I love playing softball in the summer. When I’m not busy, you can find me watching reruns of my favorite TV show, Friends. I look forward to the opportunity of working alongside you on your journey!
